It might sound simple but its true. Good nutrition begins and ends in the grocery store. Think about it, you eat what’s in your house. How did it get in the house to begin with? Because someone went to the grocery store, bought it, and brought it in the house. That’s how silly.
A Fit True Nutrition client will write up a food journal, which is part of Step 3 In the The Fit True Nutrition Plan, and repeatedly on the journal appears something that the client admits they shouldn’t be eating. We’re not talking about some random dinner out or a cheat meal or anything. We are talking about something that they ate. . . AT HOME. . . REPEATEDLY.
This may seem like a wild concept, but if you buy something at the grocery store (excluding videos, shampoo, and lighter fluid) you will have it in your house and eventually eat it. Now hold on to your shrinking waistlines because this next concept might rock your world. If you don’t buy something and put it into the grocery store you won’t bring it home and YOU WON’T EAT IT. . . . Shocking, I know.
So here are a few simple tips:
1. Set a grocery budget. Figure out how much money you need to eat healthy. That is your budget. Stick to it. You’ll save money and eat healthier. If you’re in a financial situation where a food budget isn’t necessary, do it anyway. This isn’t about money. It is about good nutrition. Stick to the budget.
2. Plan out your meals that you will be eating over the course of the week. It won’t take as long as you think. Sit down and plan out what each meal is going to be. Stick to the plan.
3. Make a list of the groceries that you’ll need. Only put on the list what you will need in order to eat the meals that you’ve planned. That’s why your plan should include everything your going to eat for the week. No fudging. No, “Well, maybe Tuesday night we’ll have chicken.” Instead say, “Tuesday night we will have chicken. And Wednesday morning I will have . . . ” Stick to the list.
4. Go to the grocery store and shop. Don’t go over budget. Don’t impulse shop. Get what you put down on the shopping list and only what you put down on the shopping list. Remember: GOOD NUTRITION HAPPENS IN THE GROCERY STORE. Compromise kills a well made plan.
There is no way that you can follow these tips and not get a better hold of your eating habits.

Great tips Tim, people would be absolutely amazed at the difference in their eating habits and their pocket books if they just followed your grocery shopping routine.
Thanks Doc.

@ license to kill. My blog is directed at person A getting control of how person A shops and consequently has in his own house. Not what person A eats (“We’re not talking about some random dinner out or a cheat meal or anything.”) at person B’s house because of person B’s shopping. BTW, tell Beth to make sure that you have some Fig Newtons over there the next timer I come over to play Scrabble.
