Better Nutrition Shopping

Here’s a repeat of an earlier post. It’s actually an excerpt from Fit True’s Nutrition Plan (FREE ebook).

GOOD NUTRITION BEGINS IN THE GROCERY STORE. It might sound ridiculously simple, but it is true. Good nutrition begins AND ENDS in the grocery store. Think about it. You eat what’s in your house.

“How did it get in the house to begin with?” one might ask.

Because someone went to the grocery store, bought it, and brought it in the house, that’s how.

This may seem like a wild concept, but if you buy something at the grocery store you will have it in your house and eventually eat it. Now hold on to your shrinking waistlines because this next concept might rock your world. If you don’t buy something and put it into the grocery basket, you won’t bring it home and YOU WON’T EAT IT. . . . Shocking, I know.

So here are a few simple things you can do to improve your nutrition:

1. Plan out all your meals over the course of the week.

It won’t take as long as you think. Sit down and plan out what each meal is going to be. Remember, each meal that you don’t plan is a temptation to eat what’s most available which 9 times out of 10 times is going to be garbage. So, none of this,

“Well, maybe Tuesday we’ll have chicken.”

Instead say,

“Tuesday night WE WILL have chicken. And Wednesday morning I WILL have . . .”

Take control of your eating choices and stick to the plan.

2. Make a list of the groceries you’ll need.

Only put on the list what you need to get to eat the meals that you’ve planned for the week. That’s why your plan should include everything you’re going to eat for the week.

3. Set a grocery budget.

Figure out how much money you need to get the food for the meals on your list. That is your budget. Stick to the budget each week you shop. You’ll save money and eat healthier. If you’re in a financial situation where a food budget isn’t necessary, make a food budget anyway. This isn’t about money. It is about good nutrition.

4. Pick a grocery shopping day and time.

It is very important that you remain consistent. Spending the same amount each time you shop is only part of that. Shopping at the same time each week is the other part. If you always spend $60 each time you shop but shop on Tuesday on one week, Thursday on the next and Monday on the next the budget is going to be useless.

5. Go to the grocery store.

Don’t go over budget. Don’t impulse shop. Get what you put down on the shopping list and only what you put down on the shopping list.

Remember: GOOD NUTRITION HAPPENS IN THE GROCERY STORE. Compromise kills a well made plan. Download Fit True’s Nutrition Plan (FREE ebook) and leave your comments below.
